Calibre Dune Fat Bike

Got when I moved (from the hills) to the (Northumberland) coast.
Doooone and I have ridden every bit of ridable beach from Berwick to Lynmouth.I've bust the frame, upgraded everything. But I love it.

Frame cracked around seat tube after 2 yrs/2000 km of mostly beach sand riding. Until then I was quite happy - good value for money, cheap but capable. Brakes lack power.

so, for the money great.
I have to be grateful to the Dune as it introduced me to fat biking. If you are thinking about going for a fat bike, stop he thinking and just do it. SMILES PER MILES.
NOW THE BAD NEWS.
The Dune has very very weak chain stays. Mine cracked near the bottom bracket. This has happened to many other owners. You might get lucky, but I would NEVER have a a Dune for a long Bike packing trip.

I've had this bike for 8 months now,no breakages on the bike the standard parts are more than up to the job,this bike offers huge amounts of grip on trails,but get fat bike mud guards you will need them as it picks up loads of mud from those oversized tyres,great bike loads of fun

I got the Dune 6 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Great on sand, gravel, hell I have no trouble riding street on it either. I bought it to rig up for bikepacking this winter and it's almost set... there's just one... pain in the backside problem.. I've had to have the chainrings replaced, and now the chain. The small ring suffers from massive chainsuck (and I'm careful with my shifting!), to the extent that my chainstay is scraped down to bare metal and then some. Yeah, you can buy a chainstay protector, but this much damage in 6 weeks from mostly city commutes is crazy. I am at the point now that I may switch to a 1 by X chainset just to avoid further damage to the frame. Expect to spend on getting this bike up to it's full potential.

Well I haven't been on a bike in years and have gone up in weight to around 20stones!
To be honest I never used it for around 6weeks as I'm a lazy git being 20 stones n'all, well, took the beast out last week for the 1st time ......absolutely love it to bits just like being a kid again, cruising along with my big fat wheels yeehah lol even took it out In the rain to the local park n flew through the biggest muddiest puddles (small ponds ??) I could find laughing away like some nutcase. So yer if you're thinking of getting 1 then my advice is go for it, it's great fun well I'm a 45yr old father of 4 and manage to feel like my 10yr old self again even if it's only for an hour or two here n there....????

I love this Dune Calibre fat bike is a good bike and it goes through mad sand and much much more just keeps coming back for more and it is built quite well I have been jumping around quite hard on it and it hasn't broken yet so the quality is very good strong and sturdy definitely 5 star

Got this bike a couple of weeks ago. Used it around Dalgety Bay and along the Fife coastal routes. Does what is says on the tin. SO much more fun than a mountain bike. Surprisingly light weight. As others have said there's some cost cutting on a couple of components. I find the brakes are ok. The gears are little bit less forgiving; I've jammed the chain against the frame a few times. I've also invested in some fat bike mud guards - if you intend to use this in anything other than dry conditions you need protection from the mud! Really happy with my purchase.

I’ve had this bike since October 2016 and it is an absolute blast!
This is my first experience of Fat Biking but If you’re of a certain age it is a bit like being 15 again and riding my Raleigh Grifter!
On and Off-road and on the Beach it works. I have had a couple instances of ‘chain suck’ while on the beach but other than that I have had no major problems with this bike.
As is inevitable there have been a couple of upgrades. First was the Brakes; after a trip to the Lagan Wolftrax it was really obvious that I was going faster than the brakes could comfortably cope with! And they were very harsh at the lever (very on/off). I’ve swapped them for a pair of SLX brakes and there have been no more ‘scary moments’. The pedals and the grips are the only other thing I’ve changed. I’ll wait for everything else to wear out before it gets replaced.
I got a large and the only thing I would say is that if your inside leg is longer than 32 inches you will have to factor in a new (longer) seatpost.

This bike is fantastic, it’s a beast and rides really well. Put this with the service and product knowledge of Fred in the Leicester store I’m delighted

If you just want to ride and grin like a lunatic, buy one of these. I've put higher, wider, more aggressive DH bars on with a shorter stem for a more MX feel.
The brakes are fun to tinker with and I've got them just the way I like them, one finger on each will stop you hard.
Great fun on and off road, would recommend to anyone that has become slightly tired of the hardtail/full-suss debate.
These are from the 'just have fun' school of riding and succeed ant the fun part in style.

Well, I have had the bike for 6 weeks and I have just dropped it off for its 6 week service.

The bad (not too bad but more downsides):
1, The pedals, as soon as they get wet they may as well be made of ice. As Mr Bon Jovi would say, slippery when wet.
2, The chain; previous reviews have highlighted the chain as being poor, I think it is a combination of a lack of clutch rear derailleur and long chain length that leads to repeated chain failures. By failure i mean the chain comes off while riding on rougher ground and it gets wedged between the frame and chain ring.
3, Hydraulic brakes sets can be bought for £40, less if you buy in bulk. I don't understand why it doesn't have them. The brakes are just about sufficient but the hydro would make it exceptional.

The good;
so many good things about this bike, if rides well, it feels lighter than you would expect and it feels very sturdy.
One thing that is not stated in the description s that the rims and tyres are tubeless ready, add some fluid, tubeless valves and a huge blast of air and you're tubeless.

If i could advise Calibre to change anything it would be to have a single front chain ring, a larger range on the rear cassette and clutch rear derailleur. The costs saved on front shifter, front derailleur and twin chain rings would hopefully pay for the majority of this change and improve the bike no end with a small increase in purchase price.

Overall I am very pleased with this bike, I have ridden through single track, down some quite bumpy fast downs and through deep mud and it just keeps coming back fr more.

I would recommend this bike for someone that wants something a little different, or for someone that wants a great frame, good wheel set and will upgrade components for better replacements when the originals wear out.

Purchased the Dune August 2016, having now covered 400+ miles of riding in over 30+ rides of various trail conditions, I have been so impressed, felt obliged to write a review.

If you are lookng for a great value FatBike, this ticks all the boxes. It's light (for a FatBike), great build quality, and perfectly acceptable components. I immediately swapped the mechanical disc breaks to hydraulic breaks as needed the stopping power reassurance for the type of riding I do, but the rest of the stock components work well. The supplied tyres are extremely light, great for fast rolling summer dry trail rides, however the tread was not so great for the wet winter mud, so replaced tyres with On-One Fatty's for my winter rides.

Riding this bike will put a smile on your face, ideal for trail/cross country riding, not quite so quick down the more technical descents as my full-suss mtb, but an overall more satisfying ride. I have found running the tyre pressures at 8 psi is best.

Frame geometry is spot on, I'm 5ft 6" and purchased Medium frame.

This is my first new bike that i have ever had, although i've had bikes in the past i haven't been using them like this one thats for sure. I've bought this bike as a do all bike and it really does do that, i've taken it down the beach, up hills and on long cross country tracks . there are some draw backs to this bike and they are the chain , i can clean it after every ride with the park tool cleaner and i still get chain suck,i'm not sure if its the chain , the chain set or the frame can't handle a double cog at the front who knows,if i didn't clean it i just wouldn't get anywhere on the bike. the front brake is ace but the back one is really poor,i've cleaned the disc but it doesn't make much difference.the tyres aren't the greatest for winter muck and they aren't very puncture resistant , so i might just change them for winter tyres(changing the tyre pressures by a couple of psi makes a huge difference to the way the bike handles). ive changed the seat too as its like siting on a plank of wood.After having the bike for over a month now i would recommend it to someone wanting something different from the normal and a bike that will go almost anywhere,i have my old mtb and its really odd cycling it, the comfort has gone and the tyres look really really thin....i'll stick with the fat bike for now, smiles allround :)

Important info for those hoping for a truly lightweight fat bike - my size M bike weighs 14.4 kgs, not 13.2 as specified on the website. Not a big difference but still...

Some quick observations after 40 kms in mixed terrain and 50 kms on the beach:

- size M frame is OK for riders up to my heght (179 cms), taller people should choose size L;
- build quality seems very good;
- the drivetrain is quite acceptable, I don't think you really need anything much better in a bike like this;
- one info missing from the website is the size of chainrings: 36/24T
- the weakest part of the bike are the brakes. Perhaps it's about adjustment, but so far the rear brake works well, the front is too weak for any serious descents.
- the tyres (Kenda Juggernaut Pro) are very light, but also appear not very durable and seem to have quite high rolling resistance. I was able to ride 27-28 km/h on flat tarmac but only with significant effort. On slightly wet beach sand I was able to average 15 km/h with about 0.7 bar (10 psi);

So much for the first impressions, will add a longer review after riding some more.

Brilliant. Without doubt the best VFM bike I have ever bought. I'm not saying it's perfect, the drivetrain is obviously low end and shifting is not the smoothest, but I'll run it as is until it needs replacing. The cable discs aren't as bad as I thought they would be and I intend to see how i get on with them for now. It's really put the fun back into mountainbiking for me. The frame, forks, wheels and tyres are standout items and the overall weight is a lot lighter than anticipated.

had on one 45650b and this bike is lighter and have gone down stuff I wouldn't have done on the 45650b that cost 3 time as mush. I am faster up and down hills.
I have now upgraded the running gear and it is even better gone 1 b 10 30t front 11-42 back shimano deore brakes. works like a dream this is now my only bike.
also converted to tubeless nicely.
cant get enough of riding it.
you will stand out. every ride I have been on in the 6 months someone has asked about the bike.

Hugely impressed with everything about this bike, phenomenal grip, I've not found anything i cant tackle yet, and its a really comfy position to be in for the more technical descents. Coupled with a pannier and handle bar bag, I've had some fun wild camps track side, before hitting the trails again in the morning.
Definitely recommend this to all of you!
